The Boeing 777-200ER, with registration N76010, climbed to 30,000ft then 32,000ft on it’s North route over Canada.
While flying over Ontario, the crew reported a mechanical issue on board and decided to diverted to SFO Airport, avoiding thunderstorm.
The aircraft landed more than 6 hours later. San Francisco is a major crew and maintenance base for United.
The airline confirmed a diversion to Concourse G, gate G13 at SFO.
The 25-year-old aircraft returned later to Newark.
