CHICAGO, Jan 24, 2026 — A “monster” winter storm fueled by a direct plunge of the polar vortex is currently engulfing the United States, bringing life-threatening temperatures and significant snowfall to the nation’s busiest travel corridors.

Meteorologists warn that this event, already being dubbed “Winter Storm Fern,” is one of the most widespread in years, affecting over 200 million people from the Southern Rockies to the Northeast.

Airport Impact and Forecasted Conditions

Major aviation hubs are bracing for “catastrophic” ice and heavy snow accumulations through Saturday and Sunday. Airlines have already issued travel waivers for over 110 airports.

Airport (Code)Expected Low TempSnow/Ice ForecastImpact Level
Chicago O’Hare (ORD)-23°C (-10°F)Light snow, but -45°C wind chillsSevere ground delays
New York (JFK/LGA)-12°C (10°F)10 to 18 inches (25–45 cm)Major cancellations
Atlanta (ATL)-5°C (23°F)0.5 to 0.75 inch of iceHigh risk of closure
Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW)-9°C (16°F)1-2 inches snow + heavy glazing of ice48+ hours below freezing
Boston (BOS)-15°C (5°F)12 to 18 inches (30–45 cm)Total operations halt
Oklahoma City (OKC)-14°C (7°F)18 to 22 inches (45–55 cm)Record-breaking snow

A Nationwide Deep Freeze

The storm is unique due to its massive scale. While the Northeast prepares for a “snow-maggedon” with totals potentially reaching 2 feet (60 cm) in parts of the Appalachians, the South is facing a rare and dangerous ice event.

“This is a rare combination of an atmospheric river colliding with Arctic air,” says one National Weather Service bulletin. “Frostbite can occur in as little as 5 to 10 minutes in the Upper Midwest where wind chills are hitting -50°C.”

Traveler Advice

More than 13,000 flights have already been delayed or cancelled as of Saturday morning. Ground stops are in effect at several East Coast airports due to high winds and low visibility. Travelers are urged to:

  • Check flight statuses before leaving for the airport.
  • Utilize airline apps to rebook, as many carriers are allowing free changes through Monday.
  • Prepare for “knock-on” effects that may disrupt schedules globally through early next week.
