The flights between Germany and Russia were resumed on Wednesday evening after Lufthansa said that it had received permission to land in Moscow and St Petersburg for the entire month of June.
Earlier this week, Germany’s transport ministry had blocked Russian airlines to use its airspace after Moscow failed to approve Lufthansa flights to Russia. Two Lufthansa flights departing from Frankfurt were cancelled on Wednesday.
“Due to the reciprocal practice, the Federal Aviation Authority also did not issue any further permits for flights operated by Russian airlines as long as authorisations are pending on the Russian side,” the German ministry said.
Three Aeroflot flights on top of another four flights on Wednesday were affected by the cancellations. All passengers of these cancelled flights will get a full refund.
These tit-for-tat flight cancellations came amid mounting tension between Russia and the European Union over Moscow’s support for Belarus.
After the Russian authorities approved flights from Germany on Wednesday evening, Aeroflot and S7 Airlines were also allowed to land in Germany.
