Eight employees of US-Bangla Airlines were arrested at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on the charge of smuggling gold bars weighing seven kilograms from Dubai.
The Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate arrested them, and they were handed over to the airport police on Tuesday morning.
The customs department seized 60 gold bars weighing seven kilograms from the leftover food boxes of the vehicle supplying food at 7:00 am. Customs sources said the seized gold bars are worth about Tk 4.87 crore ($575,000) in the Bangladeshi market.
Two separate cases were filed against the employees of the Catering team.
Kamrul Islam, General Manager, Public Relations of US-Bangla Airlines told The Daily Star:
“US-Bangla Airlines will provide all kinds of assistance to law enforcement agencies.”
US-Bangla Airlines began operating flights on Dhaka-Dubai-Dhaka route on 1st February.
