BORDEAUX, France — Air travel at Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport (BOD) came to a halt on Tuesday afternoon after a massive, fast-spreading fire broke out adjacent to the airfield, killing two firefighters in the line of duty and forcing civil aviation authorities to suspend flight operations.

The tragedy unfolded shortly after 2:30 p.m. local time near Avenue Roland Garros, right beside the airport’s long-term P4 parking facility. What began as a brush fire rapidly swept across local vegetation and engulfed a nearby building, sending dense plumes of black smoke towering directly into the flight path.

Flights Grounded as Smoke Covers Airfield

Due to near-zero visibility and active emergency operations on the airport perimeter, air traffic control suspended departures and placed incoming arrivals on hold or diverted them to regional hubs.

Terminal halls quickly filled with thousands of stranded passengers as airlines issued warnings for severe delays and flight cancellations. Airport officials urged all travelers to check their flight status before attempting to reach the site, as several main access roads around Mérignac were blocked off to prioritize emergency service vehicles.

Tragic Loss in the Line of Duty

Addressing lawmakers at the National Assembly in Paris, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez confirmed the loss of two firefighters who died while tackling the structural blaze near the airport perimeter.

“Two firefighters died while fighting a building fire” near the airport, Nuñez stated, adding that he was immediately traveling to the scene in the Gironde department.

Operational Snapshot & Wildfire Crisis

The incident comes as scorching heat and prolonged drought continue to push wildfire risks across southwestern France to extreme levels. The Gironde department had just been placed on the highest red alert level for forest fires earlier in the day.
