DUBAI, UAE — Multiple loud explosions rocked the skies over the United Arab Emirates on Monday afternoon as national air defense systems engaged a wave of incoming missiles and drones launched from Iran.

The UAE Ministry of Defense confirmed that its defense shield, including Patriot and THAAD systems, successfully intercepted four cruise missiles and several drones over territorial waters and unpopulated areas. However, the sheer scale of the engagement has triggered immediate disruptions to international travel.

Key Developments:

Major flight hubs, including Dubai International (DXB) and Zayed International Airport (AUH) in Abu Dhabi, have placed all incoming flights into holding patterns. Several long-haul flights have been diverted to neighboring countries or forced to return to their points of origin.

While the majority of threats were neutralized, authorities reported that a drone strike sparked a fire at an oil facility in Fujairah. Civil defense teams are currently on-site to contain the blaze; no casualties have been reported thus far.

Residents in Dubai and Abu Dhabi reported hearing thunderous booms and seeing streaks of light in the sky—the result of mid-air interceptions. The government briefly issued a shelter-in-place order before sending an “all-clear” message shortly after the primary wave of attacks subsided.

Impact on Global Travel

The sudden escalation has sent shockwaves through the aviation industry. Dubai International, the world’s busiest airport for international traffic, is currently managing a massive backlog of “holding” aircraft.

Context of the Conflict

This latest barrage follows months of heightened regional tension. Since the initial outbreak of hostilities in late February 2026, the UAE has reportedly intercepted over 500 ballistic missiles and thousands of drones. Today’s attack marks a significant escalation in the use of cruise missiles targeting the UAE’s commercial and energy infrastructure.

This is a developing story. Updates will follow as more information becomes available.
