DUBAI/ABU DHABI – Chaos has gripped the Middle East’s primary aviation corridors as dozens of international flights bound for Dubai and Abu Dhabi were forced into holding patterns or diverted Thursday following a significant escalation in missile and drone attacks from Iran.

For the fifth consecutive day since the outbreak of hostilities on February 28, the United Arab Emirates’ air defense systems were heavily engaged. On Thursday, March 5, the UAE Ministry of Defence confirmed it intercepted six ballistic missiles and 125 drones targeting various locations across the country.

Explosions Near Zayed International Airport

Witnesses in the capital reported a series of thunderous explosions near Zayed International Airport (AUH). While the Ministry of Defence stated that most threats were neutralized, at least one ballistic missile reportedly breached defenses, and falling debris from successful interceptions has caused widespread alarm.

Local authorities confirmed that at least six people were injured in Abu Dhabi today due to shrapnel and blast effects. This follows a week of intermittent strikes that have already claimed the lives of three foreign nationals and injured nearly 80 others across the Emirates.

UPDATE 16:45 UTC
Flight operations are resuming to DXB and AUH.
