LOS ANGELES — A Mexico City-bound United Airlines flight was forced to make an emergency diversion to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on Thursday afternoon following an in-flight technical issue.

United Airlines Flight UA817, operated by an Airbus A320 (registration N495UA), departed San Francisco International Airport (SFO) from runway 28L at 4:45 p.m. PDT on August 20, 2026. The departure came after an initial delay of more than an hour.

After takeoff, the aircraft turned south toward Mexico City International Airport and climbed to its cruising altitude of 33,000 feet. However, roughly two hours into the flight, the flight crew made the decision to turn around.

While in transit, the pilots transmitted a squawk code of 7700—the international aviation signal indicating an emergency—citing a technical fault on board. Air traffic controllers directed the aircraft toward LAX, where it made a safe emergency landing on runway 25L approximately 2 hours and 41 minutes after initially taking off from San Francisco.

United Airlines confirmed that the aircraft landed safely and was subsequently taken out of service. The Airbus A320 remains under maintenance inspection at LAX to determine the cause of the issue, and affected passengers were provided assistance to complete their travel to Mexico City.
