HOUSTON — An American Airlines flight made an emergency return to George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) shortly after takeoff following an unspecified inflight issue.
Flight AA1937, operated by a Boeing 737-800 bearing registration N983AN, departed runway 15 at IAH when the flight crew abruptly leveled off their climb at 4,000 feet. Shortly thereafter, the crew transmitted a squawk 7700 code on their transponder—the universal aviation signal used by pilots to declare a general emergency to air traffic control.
Declaring a squawk 7700 grants the aircraft immediate priority handling from air traffic controllers, clearing airspace and routing the plane back to the nearest suitable airport for a prompt landing. Airport emergency ground crews are typically placed on standby to inspect the aircraft upon touchdown as a standard safety precaution.
