Ryanair flight FR347 departed London Stansted at 18:00 BST for a 2-hour flight to Madrid.
The crew declared an emergency (squawk 7700) over Brittany after less than one hour in the air.
The flight is operated by a Boeing 737-8200 MAX (registration EI-HGP).
