A DHC8-300 aircraft operated by Renegade Air for the UN World Food Programme made an emergency landing without main landing gear at Malakal airport.
The aircraft with registration 5Y-SMI had departed from Buny Airstrip in Jonglei, South Sudan, and lost its main landing gear wheels, axle, and portions of the struts during takeoff.
Despite the critical loss, the pilot managed to control the plane and execute a belly landing. All 35 passengers and three crew onboard were safely evacuated.
Emergency services were immediately deployed to the scene to assist with the evacuation and secure the aircraft. The UN has confirmed that all passengers are accounted for and have received necessary medical attention.
An investigation into the cause of the incident has been launched. Aviation experts are examining factors such as aircraft maintenance, weather conditions, and airport infrastructure.
The UN World Food Programme has expressed relief at the safe outcome and pledged full cooperation with the investigation.
