On 25th May, a Super Air Jet Airbus A320 veered off the runway while landing at Weda Bay Airport (WAEH) in Indonesia.
The Airbus A320 with registration PK-STD, which was manufactured in 2014, was operating flight IU2180 from Manado (MDC). However, it went off the runway while landing on a wet runway.
The A320 came to rest approximately 30 meters off the runway on soft ground. Thankfully, all 172 passengers and crew onboard flight IU2180 remained uninjured.
Reports indicate that the aircraft operating flight IU2180 encountered difficulties during landing due to wet runway conditions. The runway at Weda Bay Airport is 1650 meters long, and the A320 overshot the runway.
“We support and respect the investigation process that is being carried out by the National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) and other authorized authorities. We apologize for the inconvenience experienced by the guests. We are committed to continuing to prioritize safety and comfort for guests.”
Ari Azhari, the President and Director of Super Air Jet.
An investigation is likely underway to determine the cause of the incident. Wet runway conditions can significantly impact an aircraft’s braking ability, and authorities will be looking into factors such as the severity of the weather, pilot error, and any mechanical issues that may have contributed to the runway excursion.
