The crew decided to declare an emergency due to an engine issue about one hour into the flight.
The plane departed runway 09R at 19.03 BST from London Heathrow and was scheduled to land at Washington at 22.30 EDT.
UPDATE the A330 has landed runway 09L at 21.18 BST.
