Authorities in India mistakenly sent the wrong remains to several British families whose died in a plane crash last month.

At least two UK nationals were misidentified and repatriated incorrectly, said James Healy-Pratt, an international aviation lawyer speaking on behalf of affected British families.

In one case, a family was forced to cancel funeral arrangements after learning that the coffin they received did not contain their relative, but the body of an unidentified passenger.

In another incident, the remains of multiple victims had been mistakenly placed in a single casket and had to be separated before burial could proceed.

A London coroner discovered that the DNA of several individuals had been co-mingled within one casket, Healy-Pratt told UK news agency PA Media.

The tragic crash occurred on June 12, when an Air India flight AI171 lost momentum and plummeted into a densely populated neighborhood in Ahmedabad, western India, killing all but one of the 242 people on board.
