LONDON — A British Airways Boeing 777 crossing the Atlantic experienced a brief overspeed incident after encountering intense jet stream winds during an overnight flight from the Caribbean to London Heathrow.

Flight BA252, operated by a Boeing 777-200 registered as G-VIID, was traveling from Nassau to London on the night of Tuesday, November 3, to Wednesday, November 4, 2026. While cruising at an altitude of 38,000 feet over the Atlantic Ocean, the aircraft was caught in powerful upper-level wind currents that pushed its speed to approximately 282 knots, placing it roughly 7 to 10 knots above its standard operational limit for those conditions.

The phenomenon was not isolated to BA252. Several other transatlantic flights reported encountering similar overspeed alerts during the same window as they navigated the exceptionally strong autumn jet stream.

Following the incident, the flight crew took swift corrective action, subsequently climbing the aircraft to 39,000 feet and later to 41,000 feet to find smoother air and stabilize the aircraft’s airspeed.

Despite the high-altitude hiccup, the flight continued safely toward the UK. Flight BA252 successfully landed at London Heathrow Airport at 11:13 GMT, completing the journey with a total air time of 7 hours and 57 minutes. No injuries or structural issues were reported.
