NEW YORK — Severe air traffic disruptions swept across major airports in the U.S. Northeast after a primary communications failure and a severed backup line disabled critical air traffic control connections, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) officials confirmed.

The operational chaos began when a primary communications circuit failed at an FAA air traffic control facility in Philadelphia. As systems attempted to failover, authorities discovered that a secondary fiber-optic backup line had been accidentally cut by construction crews working in New Jersey.

FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford told reporters that the severed backup line presents a significant repair challenge, estimating it could take roughly 13 hours to fully restore the fiber connection while technical teams work to bring an alternative circuit online.

Key Regional Hubs Affected

The communication loss forced the FAA to institute restrictions and ground stops, though operational impacts varied widely by location depending on local traffic flow and airspace demands:

  • Newark Liberty International & Philadelphia International: Bore the primary impact of the system failure.Flight-tracking service FlightAware reported that more than 600 flights across Newark and Philadelphia combined experienced delays, representing over 20% of scheduled operations at both major hubs.
  • John F. Kennedy International & LaGuardia: Both New York-area airports experienced ground stops and flight restrictions before officials began gradually resuming incoming traffic once alternative routing was established.
  • Boston Logan International: Experienced ground stops and knock-on operational delays as controllers managed traffic spillover across the congested Northeast corridor.

In addition to local ground delays, the FAA Administrator confirmed that approximately 90 flights were diverted to alternative airports across the region to ensure airspace safety while frequencies were restored.

Unfortunate Timing for High-Level Diplomacy

The widespread aviation failure coincides with the arrival of dozens of international heads of state, foreign ministers, and diplomatic delegations traveling to New York for the annual United Nations General Assembly. The surge in diplomatic charter flights and VIP arrivals has further complicated efforts to manage regional airspace congestion.

The FAA emphasized that ground stops and flow controls will remain strictly enforced until officials are completely satisfied that all communication links meet rigorous safety standards. Travelers heading through Northeast transit hubs are strongly advised to check their flight status directly with their airline before heading to the airport.
