MIAMI — An Amazon Prime Air Boeing 767 cargo aircraft overran the runway upon landing and struck multiple vehicles at Miami International Airport (MIA) on Sunday, September 6, 2026, crossing a nearby roadway and catching fire.

Flight tracking data indicates that the aircraft, a Boeing 767-300F registered as N1997A, was operating a scheduled cargo flight from San Juan, Puerto Rico, to Miami. The incident occurred at approximately 05:54:20 PM UTC, when the aircraft veered off Runway 30 during touchdown.

Overrun and Fire Response

Footage captured at the scene showed heavy black smoke billowing from the frame of the wide-body freighter.According to eyewitness reports and preliminary video, the aircraft cleared the airfield boundaries and came to a stop adjacent to a perimeter roadway, sustaining major damage, including losing its right wing before catching fire.

Emergency response teams from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue arrived rapidly to extinguish the blaze. Fire crews deployed foam streams to suppress the flames fueled by residual jet fuel.

Impact on Airport Operations

The incident occurred during a busy holiday weekend, prompting aviation authorities to temporarily ground departures and issue a ground stop at Miami International Airport.

  • Status of the Crew:Authorities have not yet officially confirmed the condition of the flight crew aboard the freighter.
  • Runway Closures: Runway 30 and adjacent taxiways remain closed while emergency teams secure the site and fuel containment procedures continue.

We’ve issued a full ground stop at Miami International while first responders assess the scene after an Amazon cargo plane overran the runway.

If you’re traveling through the area, please expect significant delays and potential cancellations.

Investigation Launched

Federal agencies, including the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), have launched a joint investigation into the cause of the runway excursion. Investigators will evaluate weather conditions at the time of arrival, aircraft telemetry, runway surface conditions, and flight recorder data.

Neither Amazon Air nor the operating carrier has issued a final statement pending official updates from airport authorities and federal investigators.

UPDATE
At least five people have died and five others were injured.
