A serious aviation incident occurred at Munich Airport (MUC) after a Vietnam Airlines Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner overran the runway during takeoff, damaging lighting equipment and suffering significant structural damage before circling back for an emergency landing.
Flight VN34, operated by a ten-year-old aircraft (registration VN-A867) bound for Hanoi, was taking off from Munich’s 4,000-meter Runway 26L. Video footage captured by local plane spotters shows the widebody jet accelerating standardly at first, but taking up an unusually large portion of the asphalt before attempting to rotate.
The aircraft plowed roughly 120 meters past the paved threshold, churning up dirt and grass, striking approach lights, and dragging its tail along the ground before finally lifting off into the air.
Technical Damage and Return to Munich
Immediately following the harrowing departure, crew indications alerted the pilots to low tire pressure and potential airframe contact with the runway. Ground observations confirmed that tire skid marks extended to the very edge of the runway and directly into the grass—evidence suggesting the aircraft’s wheel brakes may have been dragging or failed to release fully during the takeoff roll.
After climbing to approximately 10,000 feet, the pilots held over Bavaria for nearly two hours to dump fuel and reduce weight. Upon returning to Munich Airport, the 787 performed two visual low-approaches on Runway 26R to allow ground crews to visually inspect the damaged gear. When the aircraft touched down, smoke was observed trailing from the left main landing gear. The jet came to a stop, temporarily disabling the runway, but all passengers and crew evacuated safely without reported injuries.
Damage to the composite fuselage was extensive, featuring scraped skin panels and a punctured aft belly, which will likely keep the aircraft grounded in Germany for several months.

- Braking and Resistance: Skid marks going all the way off the pavement point toward partially clamped brakes or a seized brake mechanism, which would severely restrict acceleration.
- Failure to Abort at V1: Standard operating procedures dictate that if an aircraft does not achieve expected acceleration or reach target decision speed ($V_1$) within the computed distance, the takeoff must be rejected. Questions linger as to why the crew continued down the 4,000-meter runway despite missing normal performance milestones.
- Late Rotation Risk: Once an aircraft nears the end of paved surface at high speed, pilots face a critical choice between a high-speed overrun into terrain or pulling back aggressively on the yoke to force rotation—the latter risking a major tail strike or aerodynamic stall, as occurred here.
Germany’s Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation (BFU) has launched a formal investigation alongside the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV). Investigators will inspect the aircraft’s Flight Data Recorder (FDR), landing gear telemetry, and performance entry calculations to determine whether technical malfunction or human error led to the near-catastrophic departure.
