KEY WEST, Fla. — Emergency crews successfully located the wreckage of a small aircraft that crashed into a dense patch of mangroves near the eastern edge of the runway at Key West International Airport.

The plane was carrying a pilot and four passengers at the time of the incident.

Quick Response in Dense Terrain

First responders launched an immediate search and rescue operation after the aircraft went down just past the airport boundary. The crash site—situated in thick, swampy mangrove clusters characteristic of the Florida Keys coastline—presented significant visibility and access challenges for ground crews.

Despite the difficult terrain, search teams successfully pinpointed the downed aircraft following an intensive 30-minute search.

Incident Summary

  • Location: Mangroves near the east end of the runway, Key West International Airport.
  • Occupants: 5 total (1 pilot, 4 passengers).
  • Search Time: 30 minutes until wreckage confirmation.

Status of the Investigation

Officials have not yet released the identities or medical conditions of the five people on board, nor has the type of aircraft been specified.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have been notified of the incident. Investigators will be tasked with determining what caused the aircraft to lose altitude or veer off course immediately following takeoff or during its final approach to the runway.

This is a developing story. Updates regarding the conditions of the occupants and airport operations will be provided as details are confirmed by local authorities.
