INDIANAPOLIS – An American Airlines flight originating from Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) landed safely in Indianapolis on Wednesday night after the flight crew declared an airborne emergency.

Flight Details

American Airlines Flight AA3160, operated by a Boeing 737 MAX 8 (registration N318UX), departed Charlotte at 7:53 PM EDT on April 8, 2026. The aircraft climbed to a cruising altitude of 30,000 feet for the short hop to the Midwest.

Emergency Declaration

As the crew initiated their approach to Indianapolis International Airport (IND), they transmitted a Squawk 7700 code, the international signal for a general emergency. By declaring the emergency, the pilots were able to request priority handling from Air Traffic Control to ensure the fastest possible path to the runway.

Safe Arrival

Despite the emergency status, the aircraft touched down without further incident on Runway 23R at approximately 8:53 PM local time, just one hour after takeoff. The plane was able to taxi under its own power to Gate B8, where passengers deplaned normally.

American Airlines has not yet confirmed the specific mechanical or operational nature of the emergency. No injuries were reported among the passengers or crew.
