An American Eagle flight operated by Piedmont Airlines was forced to declare an emergency and return to Savannah shortly after departure.

SAVANNAH, GA — The aircraft, an Embraer ERJ 145LR (Registration: N677AE), had just departed for its scheduled flight to Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) when the crew reported an unspecified emergency. Following standard safety protocols, the pilots declared a Squawk 7700, signaling a general emergency to air traffic control, and requested an immediate return to the field.

Safe Landing and Response

Local emergency services were put on standby as the aircraft performed its descent. At approximately 10:45 AM EST, the plane touched down safely on Runway 10.

Ongoing Investigation

Initial reports from the scene indicate that the aircraft was met by fire crews upon landing as a precautionary measure, which is standard for emergency declarations. There have been no immediate reports of injuries to the passengers or crew on board.

The cause of the emergency—whether mechanical, electrical, or otherwise—has not yet been officially confirmed by American Airlines or Piedmont Airlines. Passengers are currently being assisted at the terminal, and it is expected they will be re-accommodated on later flights to Charlotte.

UPDATE 11:20 local time
