A flight from San Francisco to Charlotte diverted amid in-flight issue.
San Francisco, September 2, 2025 — An American Airlines flight bound for Charlotte was unexpectedly diverted to Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport yesterday for a reason still unknown.
Flight AA1960, scheduled to fly from San Francisco (SFO) to Charlotte (CLT), was redirected to Phoenix (PHX) when pilots identified a problem. Flight-tracking data confirms that the aircraft landed safely in Phoenix at approximately 8:00 PM local time.
Despite initial speculation over the reason for the redirection, we suspect a technical issue. The airbus A321(registration N931AM) descended from 33,000 feet then circled few minutes at 6,000 feet before the approach to Phoenix.
The flight resumed just 2 hours later to Charlotte, using another A321 aircraft (registration N165US).
American Airlines has not issued an official statement detailing the cause of the diversion or the subsequent plans for passengers. Still, it is standard for airlines to provide rebooking options and assistance following such disruptions.
