The United Airlines flight UA82 departed Newark Airport at 21:21 EDT to New Delhi, India.
While cruising at 33,000 feet after one hour into the flight, the pilots declared an emergency (squawk7700).
The Boeing 787-9 (registration N23983) made a U-turn over Gulf of Maine due to a technical issue.
