Fighter jets were scrambled from the Air Base in Borcea in Romania after Russian drones were detected at the Ukrainian border.

Two F-16 fighter jets from the Romanian Air Force were scrambled from the 86th Air Base in Borcea at 11:15 PM local time on Tuesday.

Russian drone strikes targeted civilian and port infrastructure in Ukraine near the Romanian border, according to the Romanian Ministry of National Defence (MoND).

The ministry reported the incident on its official website and confirmed that NATO agencies were promptly informed and remain in contact.

Residents of Tulcea County were alerted through the national RO-Alert emergency warning system. “The National Military Command Centre informed the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations about the population warning measures implemented,” the MoND stated.

The ministry also issued a strong condemnation of the Russian attacks, calling them “unjustified” and a “clear violation of international law” due to their targeting of civilian infrastructure.

The Romanian Air Force’s 86th Air Base “Lieutenant Aviator Gheorghe Mociorniță” regularly hosts NATO air policing missions and joint exercises. This includes deployments by U.S., Turkish, French, Italian, Spanish, and German F‑16s or Rafale jets.
