British Airways reported major boost in punctuality thanks to artificial intelligence and digital tools.

British Airways says its flight punctuality from Heathrow Airport has more than doubled compared to 2023, crediting artificial intelligence and other digital technologies for the improvement. In April, two-thirds of the airline’s departures from its Heathrow hub left ahead of schedule.

This represents more than twice the proportion of early departures recorded in April 2023, and nearly a 20% increase from April 2024, according to the airline. British Airways attributes this enhanced performance to advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence, forecasting, optimisation, and machine learning.

These innovations have supported the development of various digital tools and apps. One such system allows staff to assign arriving aircraft to stands based on real-time passenger connection data, helping to reduce missed onward flights. The airline estimates this system has saved around 160,000 minutes in delays.

Another tool reroutes aircraft to avoid adverse weather conditions, preventing approximately 243,000 minutes of delays.

In the first quarter of 2025, about 86% of British Airways flights from Heathrow departed on time—the best on-time performance in the airline’s history, and a sharp rise from just 46% in 2008.

Speaking at an innovation summit in Pittsburgh, British Airways CEO Sean Doyle said, “Improving operational performance is a key part of our investment programme because we know the impact delays and disruption can have on our customers. While some flight disruptions are beyond our control, we’ve focused on the areas we can influence by implementing the best possible solutions to improve the customer experience when things do go wrong.”
