A Scandinavian Airlines A330 to Miami just returned to Europe 10 hours after departure.
Sas flight #SK957 departed Stockholm, Sweden Thursday, November 14 2024 for a 10-hour flight to Miami, Florida.
The Airbus A330-300 (registration LN-RKS) departed on time at 12:55 CET. The aircraft climbed to 34,000 ft over Norway then 36,000 ft when it started to cross the Atlantic.
But while flying between Greenland and East coast of Canada, the crew decided to turn around as the 9-year-old aircraft encountered severe turbulence, dropping from FL360 to FL280.
Pilots contacted Gander OAC at 1813z on 8864 kHz indicating a doctor was onboard. A passenger suffered a panic attack, another sustained a head injury.
The A330 descended to 33,000 ft then climbed back to 37,000 ft on its way back to Europe.
The airline decided to divert the flight to Copenhagen where it landed at around 23:15 local time to be inspected by ground crew.
The passengers will be accommodated in hotels and continue their journey tomorrow.
