The wife of a pilot who suffered a medical emergency took over flying and managed to safely land the plane in California.

A pilot was flying a twin-engine Beechcraft King Air 90 with his wife from Henderson, Nevada, on their way to Monterey, California, on Oct. 4 when he was incapacitated because of a medical emergency.

His wife took control and landed the plane with help from air traffic controllers at Meadows Field Airport in Bakersfield, California, a newspaper reported.

The Beech C90A King Air (registration N6077X) managed to land at Bakersfield, CA (BFL) 2 hours and 38 minutes after departure.

A Federal Aviation Administration report states that a member of the flight crew died during the incident and there was only one other person, a passenger, on board.

The FFA said: The passenger of a twin-engine Beechcraft King Air 90 landed at Meadows Field Airport in California around 1:40 p.m. local time on Friday, Oct. 4, after the pilot had a medical emergency. Two people were on board. The aircraft departed Henderson Executive Airport in Las Vegas and was headed to Monterey Regional Airport in California.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will investigate. The NTSB will be in charge of the investigation and will provide all updates.
