On the 9th of February, 2024, a Delta Air Lines Boeing 737 collided with ground stairs at Owen Roberts International Airport in the Cayman Islands.

The Boeing 737-900 aircraft, which arrived from Atlanta as flight DL1870 collided with a stairs truck on the apron on Friday. The collision occurred during the parking process at approximately 12:51 PM local time.

The impact caused damage to the aircraft wing and toppled the stairs truck onto its side. The Cayman Islands Airports Authority (CIAA) promptly dispatched the Fire Service to the scene, ensuring passenger and airport personnel safety. Thankfully, no injuries were reported in the incident.

Flight operations were briefly affected, with a 20-minute delay, while authorities assessed the situation. The delayed Delta flight to Atlanta eventually departed later that evening at 7:40 PM.

The CIAA has launched a full investigation into the incident, collaborating with Delta and their ground handling service provider, FADS, to determine the cause. As of now, no details regarding the potential cause or the extent of the damage have been officially released.

“The safety and security of our passengers is our top priority,” stated the CIAA in a press release. “We are conducting a thorough investigation to understand the circumstances that led to this occurrence and collaborating closely with airport partners to prevent such incidents in the future.”
