PHILADELPHIA – An American Airlines flight bound for the West Coast was forced to make an unexpected U-turn over the weekend, returning to Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) just hours after departure.

Flight Details and Diversion

American Airlines flight AA522, operated by an Airbus A321neo (registration N955XV), departed Philadelphia on Saturday, May 2, 2026, at 8:12 PM EDT. The aircraft followed its standard flight path toward San Francisco (SFO), climbing to a cruising altitude of 36,000 feet.

However, the routine transcontinental journey was interrupted approximately 90 minutes into the flight. For reasons currently unknown, the flight crew made the decision to abandon the trek to California and return to Pennsylvania.

The aircraft remained in the air for a total of more than three hours, eventually touching down safely on Runway 9R at PHL.

Aircraft Status and Recovery

While the initial diversion caused significant delays for passengers, the disruption appears to have been short-lived. Following an inspection on the ground in Philadelphia, the same Airbus A321neo was cleared for service.

  • Original Departure: 8:12 PM EDT
  • Second Departure: 11:24 PM EDT
  • Estimated SFO Arrival: 2:14 AM PDT

According to American Airlines, the flight is currently back in the air and is expected to arrive at San Francisco International Airport in the early hours of Sunday morning.
