Two Lufthansa flights bound for Munich are diverting this evening due to severe thunderstorms over central Europe.

Munich, September 2, 2025 — Two Lufthansa flights bound for Munich were forced to divert this evening as severe thunderstorms swept across western and central Europe, disrupting air traffic and prompting multiple in-flight diversions.

According to flight tracking data, LH1817 from Barcelona to Munich (Airbus A320 registration D-AIWB) and LH2455 from Oslo to Munich (Airbus A321 registration D-AIDW) both diverted from their original routes after encountering weather systems described by meteorologists as “intense clustered cumulonimbus” (CB).

The storms, with tops reported between FL340 and FL380, are currently impacting eastern France and Switzerland and are moving gradually east-northeast into southwestern Germany and northwestern Italy. Strong winds associated with the weather system have increased the risks for flights attempting to land in southern Germany.

Isolated thunderstorms have also been reported over the UK and Benelux, with cloud tops ranging from FL280 to FL340, while storm activity is dissipating across Slovakia, Romania, and Serbia. A separate cluster of CB over Greece and Albania, with tops between FL320 and FL360, is also expected to weaken later this evening.

Lufthansa has not yet issued a statement about the specific diversions, but both aircraft landed safely at alternate airports, and no injuries were reported among passengers or crew.

Air traffic controllers continue to monitor the storm’s progression, warning that CB risk will persist into the evening as the weather front pushes further across Germany. Passengers traveling through the region tonight are being advised to expect possible delays and diversions.
