Air India is considering one of the biggest single aircraft orders in commercial aviation history, spending tens of billions of dollars on jets from Boeing and Airbus.

The Air India group of airlines is understood to be in the market for as many as 500 aircraft over the next decade to fulfil ambitious global expansion plans and capture more of the fast-growing regional market.

The orders include as many as 400 narrow-body jets and 100 or more wide-bodies, including dozens of Airbus A350s and Boeing 787s and 777s, they said, speaking on condition of anonymity as finishing touches are placed on the mammoth deal in coming days.

Tata Group, the Indian conglomerate whose assets include Jaguar Land Rover, bought Air India in January and last month announced plans for its merger with Vistara, the country’s second largest airline.
