Lufthansa has announced that it will suspend flights to Ukraine’s capital Kyiv from Monday amid growing security concerns flying over Ukraine.
The German flag carrier also said that it would also stop flying to and from Odesa, a key port on the Black Sea. However, Lufthansa said it would operate flights to Lviv in Western Ukraine. Commenting on this decision, an airline spokesperson said:
“The safety of our passengers and crew members is our top priority at all times. Affected guests will be informed and rebooked on alternative flight connections.”
Earlier on Saturday, the German Foreign Ministry urged its citizens to leave Ukraine. It said, “If there is a Russian attack on Ukraine, the options for assisting German nationals are very limited.”
According to the BBC, Lufthansa and its sister airlines, including Austrian Airlines, Eurowings and Swiss, operate 74 weekly flights to Ukraine.
Last week, the Dutch airline KLM became the first airline to suspend flights to Ukraine. Other airlines have also cancelled flights to and from Ukraine.
