London Heathrow Airport has been given the go-ahead from the UK Supreme Court over plans for a third runway after overturning the original ruling from the Court of Appeal.

The Supreme Court was asked to consider if the government’s failure to take into account the UK’s climate commitments meant plans for the third runway at the airport were unlawful.

The Court of Appeal had considered the case following opposition from a number of nearby London councils impacted by the Heathrow expansion, as well as Mayor Sadiq Khan and environmental chairities including Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth and Plan B Earth.

But Heathrow Airport Ltd, which owns and operates the major transport hub in London, challenged the initial ruling during a panel of five justices in October.
