Ten people, including seven crew members and three passengers, lost their lives.
Tuesday, April 23rd after two Royal Malaysian Navy helicopters collided in mid-air during a training exercise.
The incident occurred at around 9:32 am local time over the Lumut Royal Malaysian Navy base, according to a statement from the navy. The Perak Fire and Rescue Department responded to the scene and confirmed the fatalities.
The helicopters involved were identified as a Fennec (M502-6) and a HOM (M503-3).
Both helicopters had departed from Padang Sitiawan at 9:03 am and were reportedly participating in a practice run for a cross-formation flypast to celebrate the navy’s 90th anniversary.
Based on circulating video footage, investigators believe the collision occurred as the helicopters attempted to maneuver into the planned cross-formation within Lumut’s airspace. A secondary collision likely happened as a result, causing both aircraft to lose control and crash.
Malaysian authorities are currently investigating the cause of the accident.
