CAPE TOWN — A scheduled pre-match flypast by Airlink over DHL Stadium on August 29, 2026, has sparked significant safety concerns among aviation observers after video footage surfaced showing two passenger jets flying extraordinarily low over the packed venue, with one aircraft making direct contact with stadium pyrotechnics.

The ceremonial display took place immediately prior to the high-profile rugby test match between South Africa’s Springboks and New Zealand’s All Blacks. Two Airlink Embraer E195 regional jets executed the planned flyover directly above the open-air arena, which was filled to capacity with thousands of spectators.

Video footage circulating across social media platforms captured the two aircraft passing over the roof structure at what appeared to be an uncharacteristically low clearance. During the pass, stadium pyrotechnics discharged from the structure appeared to hit the trailing second aircraft, heightening scrutiny from experts regarding the coordination between ground fireworks and flight paths.

Flight tracking service Flightradar24 analyzed ADS-B telemetric data from the pass, revealing that the lowest recorded altitude for the operation was 50 feet based on standard pressure settings. When calibrated for the local QNH pressure of 1019 hPa, the aircraft reached an altitude of roughly 205 to 210 feet above mean sea level (AMSL).

Given that DHL Stadium stands approximately 164 feet high near sea level, tracking data indicates the Embraer E195 cleared the top of the stadium roof by a margin of only 41 to 46 feet (12.5 to 14 meters).

Aviation safety experts have raised sharp questions regarding the clearance protocols, minimum safe altitude margins, and timing synchronization used during the event. Operational guidelines typically mandate strict vertical spacing above populated structures and outdoor public gatherings, particularly when active pyrotechnic hazards are present.
