DENVER — A Friday night flight bound for Los Angeles turned into a harrowing emergency at Denver International Airport (DEN) after a Frontier Airlines jet struck a person on the runway during its takeoff roll, sparking an engine fire and a full-scale evacuation.

The incident occurred at approximately 11:19 PM local time on May 8. Frontier Airlines Flight F94345, an Airbus A321 (registration N646FR), was accelerating down runway 17L when the flight crew spotted an individual walking across the active strip.

Emergency on the Tarmac

As the aircraft struck the individual, the pilot immediately aborted the takeoff. The high-speed impact and subsequent heavy braking resulted in a brief engine fire. While the Denver Fire Department arrived quickly to extinguish the flames, smoke began to infiltrate the cabin, prompting the captain to order an immediate evacuation.

  • Evacuation Method: Emergency slides onto runway 17L

“We Just Hit Somebody”

Air traffic control (ATC) recordings captured the calm but urgent voice of the cockpit crew as they realized the gravity of the situation.

“Tower, Frontier 4345, we’re stopping on the runway. Uh, we just hit somebody. We have an engine fire,” the pilot reported. Shortly after, the crew confirmed the decision to egress: “We’ve got smoke on the aircraft, we’re gonna evacuate on the runway.”

The 224 passengers transitioned from a standard departure to sliding down emergency chutes into the darkness of the airfield. Authorities confirmed that at least one passenger sustained a minor injury during the evacuation process. All passengers and crew members underwent medical evaluations at the scene.

Investigation Underway

The identity and status of the individual struck on the runway have not been released, and it remains unclear how the person gained access to one of the world’s busiest active airfield environments.

In a statement released late Friday, Frontier Airlines expressed that they are “deeply saddened by this event” and are working closely with airport officials to gather more information.

Current Status:

  • Runway 17L: Remains closed for a forensic investigation.
  • NTSB: The National Transportation Safety Board has been officially notified and will lead the inquiry into the security breach and the subsequent collision.
  • Airport Operations: While the specific runway is closed, Denver International remains operational, though travelers are advised to check for potential delays.
