A Hawaiian Airlines flight bound for Honolulu returned to Los Angeles International Airport twice on Saturday under separate emergency circumstances.

Hawaiian Airlines Flight HA1 departed Los Angeles LAX Airport at 09:03 AM PDT Saturday, July 19 2025 for a scheduled flight of 5 hours and 35 minutes to Honolulu.

The Boeing 787-9, registration N780HA, climbed from runway 25R over the Pacific but turned around about 1 hour and 20 minutes into the flight due to a medical situation on board.

The aircraft landed safely back at LAX on runway 24R 2 hours and 40 minutes after departure, where paramedics met the flight and attended to the individual in need.

After the medical situation was addressed and the aircraft was refueled then cleared for departure once again, Flight HA1 took off for a second time around 01:15 PM from 25R.

But the crew was forced to stop the climb at 21,000 feet as the Dreamliner encountered a mechanical issue, prompting the crew to once again turn around and return to Los Angeles only 37 minutes after second departure.

The nature of the mechanical issue has not been disclosed, but maintenance teams are inspecting the aircraft. The one-year-old Boeing 787 is scheduled to depart LAX Sunday at 10:10.

Flight HA1 is Hawaiian Airlines’ flagship transpacific service connecting Los Angeles and Honolulu, typically carrying hundreds of passengers between the mainland and the islands daily.
