PORTO, Portugal — A Ryanair flight bound for Dublin was forced to make a sudden emergency return to Francisco de Sá Carneiro Airport following a potential security incident in the cockpit.

The aircraft, a Boeing 737-8 MAX carrying registration EI-IKJ, had just departed Porto Airport on its scheduled route to Ireland. As the jet climbed through 12,000 feet, the captain transmitted squawk code 7500 into the transponder, the universal aviation emergency code indicating a hijack attempt or an unlawful intrusion into the flight deck.

Immediately upon receiving the 7500 distress signal, Air Traffic Control (ATC) initiated critical emergency protocols. When code 7500 is entered into an aircraft’s transponder, an automated visual and audible alarm triggers directly on the controllers’ radar panels. Controllers immediately seek confirmation from the crew to rule out accidental input before alerting national defense, law enforcement, and airport emergency services.

Once the threat level was confirmed, ATC established privileged, high-priority communication with the flight FR7073, clearing the surrounding airspace and providing precise radar vectors for an immediate return to Porto.

Under full emergency coordination, the Boeing 737-8 MAX touched down safely back at Francisco de Sá Carneiro Airport near midnight, just 37 minutes after its initial departure.

About 2 hours later, the flight resumed to Dublin without incident. The aircraft landed shortly after 3.00AM in Dublin.
