Delta Air Lines flight DL208 was scheduled to land in Edinburgh at 09:45 GMT after a 6 hours and 40 minutes flight from New York JFK Airport.
The Boeing 767-300ER (registration N1603) was put on hold at 09:15 GMT, holding 9,000 feet due to an IT issue with the air traffic control provider.
Flights are diverting to Dublin, Manchester, Aberdeen, Glasgow airports.
