Flight from Chicago O’Hare International Airport to Kalamazoo, MI declared an emergency on Wednesday, August 28 2024.
The flight American Airlines #AA6175 returned to Chicago ORD as the landing gear would not retract.
The Canadair CL-600 (N455AW) departed form runway 10L at 5:45pm but the flight lasted only a bit more than 30 minutes.
The crew declared an emergency was vectored back to ORD. The 20-year-old plane landed on runway 09C and was able to taxi back to the gate.
Landing gear not retracting refers to a situation in aircraft operation where the gear (wheels) that allows the plane to land and taxi fails to fold up into the aircraft’s body after takeoff.
This can increase drag, reduce fuel efficiency, and potentially necessitate an emergency landing if it cannot be resolved in flight.
