On 15th May 2024, a Garuda Indonesia Boeing 747 was forced to return to Makassar after it encountered an engine compression stall while taking off from Makassar’s Sultan Hasanuddin Airport in Indonesia.
The Boeing 747-400 with registration ER-BOS was operated by Terra Avia on behalf of Garuda Indonesia. Flight GA1105 reportedly had 468 passengers and crew members on board.
However, while the B747 bound for Madinah was rotating, the number 4 engine suffered an engine compression stall.
Eyewitnesses reported that they heard a loud bang. Footage shared on the internet shows the B747 engine sending out streaks of flames.
Following the issue, the B747 entered a holding pattern over the coast before returning to Makassar for a safe landing approximately 90 minutes later. There are no reports of injuries among the 468 people on board.
