Europe’s air travel chaos spread to Switzerland after a technical malfunction at the country’s air traffic control system shut down flights nationwide.

Air traffic has gradually resumed since 8:30 am (0630 GMT) but several flights have been cancelled. Passengers should check with their airlines if their flights are maintained.

  • UPDATE Flight operations at Zurich Airport  are scheduled at 50% capacity until 09:30, and at 75% capacity from 09:30. We recommend passengers to pay attention to the flight information of the airline.

Earlier, Geneva’s airport said in a tweet that it was grounding all of its flights until 11 am (0900 GMT) because of the computer failure.

“Swiss airspace is closed to traffic for security reasons after computer failure with Skyguide, the Swiss air traffic control service,” Skyguide said in a statement.
