An American family has sent people running for their lives inside an airport when they packed an unexploded bomb as a souvenir.

Footage circulated online shows panicked holidaymakers and workers screaming in fear and fleeing with their luggage as they run in the departure hall at Ben Gurion Airport in Israel.

Some are seen ducking on the floor for cover while others tell their loved ones to leave the area as soon as they can.

A 32-year-old man was reportedly taken to hospital for treatment for injuries after he fell over a baggage carousel, the Israeli Airports Authority stated.

This came as a child had found the unexploded shell while visiting the Golden Heights in the region of Golan and the family had packed it to take home as souvenir, according to the Jewish Press.

The family set off the bomb scare when they showed it to security staff during check-in and airport officials immediately called for an evacuation of the area.

Bomb squads were called to the scene to give assess the ammunition and cleared the alert.
