A 60-kilogram part of a wing broke off a Nippon Cargo Airlines plane as it landed at Narita airport.
Inspectors at Narita International Airport discovered on Feb. 11 that a component covering a part of a Boeing 747-8 cargo plane’s left wing had gone missing.
According to the transport ministry’s Narita Airport office, the some 60-kilogram cover is made of metal and plastic, and is 4.4 meters long and 60 centimeters wide. It may have fallen off during flight.
The office says the Nippon Cargo Airlines Co. aircraft departed Shanghai, China, and landed at Narita at 9:02 p.m. on Feb. 11. Narita International Airport Corp. closed the runway from 10:13 p.m. to 10:24 p.m. to search for the cover, but could not find it.
The part has been found later, outside the airport. It looks to be one of the pieces supporting the flaps.
The checks delayed the departure of one aircraft by 13 minutes.
