INCIDENT Garuda Boeing 737 suffers in-flight engine failure shortly after departure

Garuda Indonesia Boeing 737-800 returned to Makassar after suffering an in-flight engine failure shortly after departure.

The Boeing 737-800, with registration PK-GFF, was performing flight GA-642 from Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport to Djalaluddin Airport.

The aircraft took off at 9:17 a.m from Makassar. After a while, at an altitude of 200 feet, the engine number 2 suffered failure and emitted black smoke.

The crew stopped the climb at 4000 feet, and at 10:04, the pilot informed the tower that the plane was going to make an emergency landing. The aircraft landed safely some 25 minutes after departure.

The aircraft was parked at apron stand R38 after landing, and upon inspection, metallic particles were found in the engine’s exhaust pipe.
