Legendary country songwriter Brett James, the Grammy Award-winning writer behind hits like “Jesus Take the Wheel” and 27 number-one country songs, was killed Thursday afternoon when his private plane crashed in a field near Franklin, North Carolina.

Brett James was one of three people killed in the small-engine plane crash in North Carolina on Thursday (Sept. 18), marking a devastating loss for the Nashville music community and the country music industry at large.

The Fatal Flight

A Cirrus SR22T crashed in a field in Franklin, North Carolina, around 3 p.m. local time on Thursday, Sept. 18. Three people were on board. The aircraft, registered to James, had departed from John C. Tune Airport in Nashville at 12:41 p.m. CST before the tragic accident occurred.

The crash occurred near an elementary school, close to the Macon County Airport in Franklin, NC. Authorities confirmed that none of the three passengers on board survived the crash, which has sent shockwaves through the music industry.

A Musical Legacy Cut Short

James established himself as one of country music’s most prolific and successful songwriters, with an impressive catalog that includes 27 number-one hits. His breakthrough came with “Jesus Take the Wheel,” performed by Carrie Underwood, which earned him a Grammy Award in 2007 for Best Country Song.

Throughout his career, James collaborated with some of the biggest names in country music, writing hits for artists including Carrie Underwood, Rascal Flatts, and Bon Jovi. His songwriting prowess extended beyond country music, demonstrating his versatility across genres.

James was also a National Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee, recognition that underscored his significant contributions to American popular music. His songs have touched millions of listeners and helped define the sound of modern country music.

Federal Investigation Launched

The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate. The NTSB will be in charge of the investigation and will provide further updates. The investigation will examine all aspects of the crash, including weather conditions, mechanical factors, and pilot operations.

The Cirrus SR22T is known for its advanced safety features, including a whole-aircraft parachute system. Investigators will work to determine what factors contributed to this accident.
