In an extraordinary sequence of events driven by severe weather, a Ryanair flight bound for Bristol ended up touching down on the sunny southeast coast of Spain in the early hours of Sunday morning, nearly 1,000 miles away from its intended destination.

On Saturday, October 24, 2026, Ryanair Flight FR2955 departed Dublin Airport just after 10:00 PM local time, carrying UK nationals returning home to Bristol. Operating the short-haul route was a Boeing 737-800 registered as 9H-QDK. Shortly after reaching its cruising altitude of 27,000 feet, the aircraft initiated its initial descent toward Bristol Airport. However, conditions on the ground were far from forgiving. Facing dangerous wind gusts and hostile weather, the flight crew made the tactical safety decision to abort the landing attempt before descending below Flight Level 200 (20,000 feet).

A Midnight Detour to Spain

What followed was an unusual holding and routing pattern over the UK. The aircraft climbed back up and headed south while flight operations evaluated potential diversion options across regional airports. After making a U-turn as controllers assessed operational viability elsewhere in the country, persistent severe weather across UK hubs led operations to choose an extreme alternative: routing the aircraft all the way to Alicante-Elche Airport in Spain. Flight FR2955 eventually landed safely on Runway 10 at Alicante at 2:15 AM local time, nearly three hours after taking off from Dublin for a flight that normally takes under an hour.

Unraveling the Puzzle: Why Alicante?

A 1,000-mile diversion for a regional hop is almost unheard of in European civil aviation, but the aircraft’s schedule earlier in the day reveals the domino effect that led to the decision. Earlier on Saturday, the same Boeing 737-800 operated Flight FR2954 from Alicante to Newquay. Leaving Spain nearly an hour late at 6:25 PM CEST, the aircraft arrived over Cornwall only to be greeted by severe storm gusts exceeding 40 knots. Unable to even begin an approach, the plane circled at 25,000 feet before diverting to Dublin.

Upon arriving in Ireland, the aircraft was completely out of position, and its crew faced a dilemma with UK nationals stranded in Dublin. Ryanair attempted the short return leg to Bristol to repatriate the passengers. When Bristol also became unviable due to the ongoing storm system, returning the plane to its original home base in Alicante proved to be the safest and most practical operational solution.

While passengers faced an unexpected international journey through the night, the dramatic detour ensured that the flight landed safely while allowing Ryanair to recover its aircraft positioning for the following day’s schedule.
