LONDON — Passengers and crew aboard a British Airways flight from Barcelona to London experienced an unsettling ordeal on Friday morning when intense noise and vibration erupted near the front cabin door during the aircraft’s descent over France.
Flight BA487, operated by an Airbus A320 registered as G-EUUZ, departed Barcelona-El Prat Airport at 06:00 UTC on Friday, October 2, scheduled for a standard two-and-a-half-hour trip to London Heathrow.
The routine flight took a dramatic turn at 09:32 UTC. As the aircraft initiated its initial descent from a cruising altitude of 34,000 feet, the flight crew encountered severe mechanical noise and strong vibrations originating near Door 1L, the main forward passenger entry door on the left side of the aircraft.
Communication inside the flight deck was severely impacted by the acoustic disturbance. Flight crew members reported that the noise levels were so extreme that they could barely hear each other speak inside the cockpit. In addition to filing a formal entry in the aircraft’s technical log, the pilots recorded video documentation of the condition using a cockpit iPad to assist maintenance engineers in diagnosing the issue.
Despite the disruption, the flight deck crew maintained full control of the aircraft and proceeded with their approach into the London terminal area. Flight BA487 made a safe landing on Runway 27L at London Heathrow Airport at 11:10 local time.
No injuries were reported among the passengers or crew, and the aircraft taxied to the gate normally. British Airways maintenance teams have inspected the aircraft for inspection to identify the source of the noise and vibration around the cabin door structure.
