MOSCOW — A U.S. Air Force C-17 Globemaster III heavy transport aircraft landed at Moscow’s Vnukovo Airport on Tuesday morning, raising questions among military aviation watchers and diplomats as official details regarding the mission remain undisclosed.

Public flight-tracking data from Flightradar24 shows the Boeing-built aircraft, bearing tail number 07-7181 and operating under callsign RCH4555, touched down in the Russian capital at approximately 07:00 UTC (10:00 a.m. local time) after flying directly from Riga, Latvia.

The aircraft had flown into Riga two days prior, on August 23, departing from Camp Springs, Maryland—home to Joint Base Andrews outside Washington, D.C.Joint Base Andrews serves as the primary hub for presidential and high-level government air transport.

It remains unverified whether the transport plane was carrying passengers, specialized cargo, or diplomatic personnel.

Neither the U.S. military nor the Pentagon has issued a statement explaining the rationale for the movement. When asked about the arrival of the heavy military transport, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Moscow had no official information regarding the aircraft.Local Russian aviation authorities and Vnukovo Airport representatives also declined to comment.

Direct flights by U.S. military or state-registered aircraft between European airspace and Moscow are extremely rare. The touchdown comes during a period of heightened geopolitical scrutiny surrounding diplomatic contacts and back-channel efforts.
