A United Airlines trans-Atlantic flight bound for New York made an emergency diversion to London Heathrow on Monday after encountering a technical issue mid-flight.

LONDON — United Airlines Flight UA169, operated by a Boeing 767-400ER (registration N76062), departed Venice Marco Polo Airport at 11:21 CEST, heading for Newark Liberty International Airport on a scheduled nine-hour-and-35-minute cross-Atlantic trip.

The aircraft climbed to its initial cruising altitude of 30,000 feet, routing across Austria, Germany, and Belgium without incident. However, shortly after entering British airspace, the flight crew transmitted a squawk 7700 code—the international aviation signal for a general emergency—citing a technical fault.

To prepare for an unscheduled landing, the crew descended the wide-body jet to 17,000 feet and entered a holding pattern to jettison excess fuel. Emergency fuel dumping is standard protocol for long-haul aircraft facing an early landing, allowing the crew to burn off weight and bring the jet within its maximum structural landing weight limits.

After completing the fuel dump, air traffic control vectored the flight into London Heathrow Airport (LHR). Flight UA169 touched down safely on runway 09L, approximately two hours and 35 minutes after taking off from Venice.

The aircraft taxied under its own power to Gate B37 at Heathrow’s Terminal 2, where passengers disembarked normally. Ground crews subsequently towed the Boeing 767 to Heathrow’s maintenance facility for further inspection and repairs.

United Airlines has not yet released details regarding the specific nature of the technical issue or rescheduling plans for the affected passengers.
